What
is Enrichment?
The cultural enrichment program encourages student’s interest in
the arts, sciences and humanities by bringing programs in to the school. These programs are funded by the Home and School
Association (HASA) as well additional grants secured from the Norwood Cultural Council and other Foundations. The programs that you see each month on the
school calendar and HASA web-site are the result of the hard work and dedication of the HASA enrichment committee who must
work beforehand to ensure that the programs are successful.
2010-2011 Enrichment Programs
Opera to Go On December 22, 2010, the children in grades
1 thru 8 were introduced to opera via the in-house HASA sponsored enrichment program Opera to Go. Students
were taught the basic elements of opera; arias, duets, and recitative. Throughout the program, volunteers from the audience
were able to participate in the discovery of opera, ending with a spontaneously composed opera of the fairy tale Cinderella.
The audience served as an opera chorus. Overall, a great time was had by all!
Potato Hill Poetry In November Andrew Green, of Potato Hill Poetry,
conducted poetry workshops for the students in grades 2 thru 5. Mr. Green was at St. Catherine's for
3 full days and visited each classroom individually for 55 minutes. During his visit, Mr. Green read some of his
favorite poems and shared his own poetry journal with the students. Mr. Green not only provided guidance,
but also worked with the children creating their own poems.
Mad About Math On November 5, 2010, students in grades 2 thru 5 had
the opportunity to attend the HASA sponsored enrichment program entitled Mad About Math. Mad
About Math was a program designed to help students understand the importance of math and its role in our everyday
lives. The program was full of demonstrations, ideas to think about, and tricks and tips for making math easier.
The presenter's personality captivated the audiences and was well received by both teachers and students.
Friendship Adventure with Ronald McDonald In September, the enrichment
team brought in "A Friendship Adventure with Ronald McDonald", sponsored by the McDonald Corporation, for
grades pre-k thru 2. The show emphasized friendship, cooperation, anti-bullying, and active play through the
use of music, magic, games and improvisation.
Molly Sullivan Sliney The first of the many HASA sponsored enrichment
programs for the 2010-2011 school year began in September. Students in grades 3 thru 8 attended a motivational
speech given by Molly Sullivan Sliney. Molly is a two time Olympian and also suffers from dyslexia.
Molly spoke of her struggles to overcome her learning disability and how fencing gave her the confidence and ability to achieve
her dreams. Her message was clear, "Believe in yourself, set goals, move toward those goals one at a time, and
your dreams can come true." Her message was powerful and as one teacher said, "There's not a child
in this room today who can not take something Molly said and apply it to his/her own life."
